Winterizing a Boat in Montana: What Actually Matters
Montana doesn't ease into winter. We've seen hard freezes in October and we've seen people lose an engine block because they figured they had another two weeks.
Here's the honest version of what matters.
The one thing you cannot skip
Water out of the engine. Every bit of it. Water expands when it freezes, and a block or exhaust manifold doesn't flex. This is the difference between a routine service bill and a catastrophic one, and it's the reason we push people to book early instead of waiting for the first cold snap.
If you take nothing else from this: get the water out, or get it to someone who will.
The rest of the list
Fuel. Fill the tank to cut down on condensation and add stabilizer. Half-empty tanks make water, and water in fuel makes spring miserable.
Oil and filter. Change it before storage, not after. Used oil holds acids and moisture, and you don't want those sitting in your engine for six months.
Ballast system. Drain tanks, run the pumps dry, clear the lines. Trapped water in a ballast line freezes just as happily as water in a block.
Battery. Pull it or put it on a maintainer. A battery that sits discharged through a Montana winter is usually a battery you're replacing.
Interior. Dry everything, prop the seats or vent them, and pull anything absorbent. Mildew is a spring problem you create in the fall.
Cover and support. Snow load is real. A cover that pools water and then freezes will stretch, tear, or dent something. Make sure it sheds.
Timing
Aim to be done before the first hard freeze, which in practice means booking in early fall rather than late. Our service bays fill up in the fall — that's just the season — so the earlier you get on the schedule, the more choice you have about when.
Shrink wrap, cover, or indoor?
All three work. Indoor storage is easiest on the boat and the most limited. A good covered setup outdoors is fine if it sheds snow and you check on it. Shrink wrap is solid short-term protection but needs venting so you're not sealing moisture in.
